The problem
Community members most have forgotten about Kentucky's Pawpaw trees and I wish for people to experience the unique flavor of the pawpaw and learn how to grow their own. My goals is to help make this beloved tree common once more!
The educational program response
So far, I have done pawpaw programing throughout a few counties and have had a great response. Since the beginning of 2024, I have done pawpaw programming at the community farmers market twice and have a great turnout scheduled for March 26th at the Warren County Extension Office. As programs happen, more and more people have questions and it develops into more programing ideas.
The participants/target audience
The participants that have came to the programs have mostly been older adults. These are the people who have had a connection with pawpaw trees since the were young. A small portion of the participants have been younger adults wanting to learn about papaws because of their families stories. It seems to be a generational tree.
Other partners (if applicable)
Dr. Pomper at KYSU has created a new research project for pawpaw farmers to try out and I have been connecting them together. Hopefully this will increase the success in growing pawpaws out west of campus.
Program impact or participant response.
As of 2024, we have had 22 participants and expect around 25 on March 26th. The response has been fantastic and people are always wanting to know more information. The impact of this program is expected in increase the interest and have more participants in the future.
