The problem

Children need daily fruits and vegetables to support healthy growth. Yet, in 2021, National Survey of Children's Health shows that nearly 1 out of every 2 children aged 1-5 years old who live in Kentucky do not eat a fruit and/or vegetable every day.  

The educational program response

The Bath County Cooperative Extension Service partnered with the Gateway District Headstart Program-Owingsville Office to provide LEAP (Literacy, Eating, and Activity for Preschoolers) program. Books were chosen to promote making healthy choices, physical activity and trying new fruits and vegetables. 

The participants/target audience

The Bath County Cooperative Extension services partnered with the Gateway District Headstart Program-Owingsville office and reached 49 children

Program impact or participant response.

100 % of participants were able to identify fruits and vegatables

100 % of participants are willing to try new foods. 

100 % of participants tried the physical activity, activities.
