Farm Tour

Author: Samuel Cofield

Planning Unit: Trigg County CES

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: Crop and Tobacco Production Systems

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Trigg County Cooperative Extension Service in conjunction with the Trigg County Ag Committee host events throughout the year to increase public knowledge of agriculture.   It is important to all involved in agriculture to inform the increasingly urban population about their farming practices so that they can understand and appreciate how important farming is to the local economy.  The tour is designed to give attendees a firsthand look at modern farming and conservation methods.

The 2022 Farm tour was back to it’s original 3 stop roots.  The first stop was at Humphries Family Farm.  The farm is managed by our previous state senator and current county judge executive.  The crops they grow include Tobacco, hay, beef cattle, Strawberries and Tomatoes.  The first stop included a wagon tour and the opportunity to sample some of the produce from their most recent farming enterprise- Tomatoes.  Stop 2 was at Little Pine Farm- run by Joe and Pat Rogers the farm raises registered Gelbvieh Cattle and commercial cattle as well. Joe and Pat built their farm from scratch and their pride shows.  Stop 3 was at the Wolfe Farm- Dwight and Sharon Wolfe both worked in the fertilizer wholesale / ag supply side of the ag industry and have recently retired.  The tillable farmland is rented out now, but in the past, it included row crops, hay, cattle, and tobacco.  All told we had over 275 attendees and 6 extension specialists involved in the 2021 farm tour.  The event was covered extensively by 2 local papers and our local radio  station.
