Health promotion is one of the keys to transforming lives and helping the community change their lives. Obesity is a problem for the State of Kentucky Fayette County is making strides in significant ways. One of those ways involves working with the second graders at Booker T Washington Elementry School. The EFNEP program from Kentucky State University has been working with the students for a couple of years. The partnership between the school and program has transformed many lives.  Fitness Friday was designed to promote health and physical activity. 

EFNEP assisted in the 2017-2018 school year has been a success reaching 60 students. Of those students, 40 of those students graduated and completed the Nutrition Education Program. The students took a pre and post survey, and most of the students showed significant improvement of the post-survey. Some of the class lessons discussed in the EFNEP series were on the nutritional benefits of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein, and dairy and non-dairy calcium fortified alternatives, differences between refined and whole grains, healthy fats, and healthy fast food alternatives, incorporating daily physical activity, and the importance of water. 

Fitness Friday will continue as a future partnership. The program helps children to learn about easy ways to become more physically active and make healthy choices with their families.
