Trigg County Farm Safety Day

Author: Teresa Garcia

Planning Unit: Trigg County CES

Major Program: Emergency Disaster Preparedness

Plan of Work: Leaders Address Community Needs

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Although most of the available land in Trigg County is used for agriculture, many people are not aware of the dangers found on farms. The Trigg County Cooperative Extension Service in partnership with the Progressive Ag Farm Safety Day, local businesses and volunteers, provided our 4th grade students with an opportunity to learn about farms, equipment, and related safety issues. We are thankful that we have been able to host Farm Safety Day for the past 15 years with the help of all the volunteers and Mr. Bill Mize, who graciously allows us to swarm his property. Each year the activities may change, but generally include safety demonstrations related to tractors, ATV's, grain bins, fire, water, and electrical hazards, food safety, and more. This was my first year as an agent and I was pleased to be invited to share a food safety demonstration with the students. It was a great day and the teachers reported that not only did the students enjoy the activities, they left with much knowledge gained.
