*The problem

About 10 Years ago, Bath County Schools Administration, Parents, and Youth echoed statements similar to such, "Not all students play basketball, football or other sports."  We need more after school activities for students who don't play sports who can be part of something to build confidence, belong to, and be a motivation to stay out of trouble."   From youth participating in Bath County 4-H Shooting Sports Program, along with this agent, 4-H Volunteers, and Middle School Administration started conducting planning meetings focusing on goals, safety, participate expectations, etc. an After School Archery Club was formed.  

*The educational program response

Initially formed as an After School Archery Club in 2014, at the middle school level, the goals of this club were to develop skills like: belonging, teamwork, conflict resolution, problem solving, planning, self esteem, and much more.  Starting the school year, 2019-2020, After School Archery Club started accepting youth whom are in high school grades.   Weekly Club Meetings averaged 24 youth at the middle school level and 12, at the high school level.  Many of the older youth have assisted younger members with shooting techniques, sharing thoughts on past experiences, recruited first time members, and more. Just recently this club format was converted to a Short Term Program.

Since the conception of the After School Archery Program, over 200 youth have became full time members. Over 500 hours of shooting sports instruction have been taught. Since 2016, club members have competed in 35 Archery Shoots were they displayed learned skills, teamwork, and pride.  For many of the club participants reports, it marked their first time ever competing in an athletic event. Many have said, "it made me nervous, focus more, proud of my accomplishments, and cool to meet/see so many other people from across Kentucky."   From their efforts, some members have or seeking participating in Collegiate Archery. Many parents/supporters over the years have traveled with their child/other family members to cheer and experience member efforts.
