In 2021 Magoffin County had 23.1% food insecurity rate compared to the 12.9% average for Kentucky.
The Farmer's Market offers residents another option for buying fresh produce. There are only a handful of options to buy fresh produce otherwise, as Magoffin County is a food desert. The Farmer's Market also promotes the local economy by supporting local growers.
Our Market offers vouchers to senior citizens and WIC participants through grants and we also participate in the Kentucky Double Dollars grant that allows us to provide more funds to those who receive vouchers. The vouchers can only be spent at the local Farmer's Market. We offer several programs to get kids active in the community and meet their local growers. In addition, we provide seasonal recipes to encourage customers to try something new or maybe something they have never cooked with fresh ingredients. Cooking demos and samples are a great way to showcase these nutritious recipes provided by the Nutrition Education Program. We aim to serve every community member and aim to provide fresh, locally grown produce and goods and support our local growers.
We partner with Big Sandy Healthcare to help match the funds of those grants to allow us to serve as many community members as possible throughout the season and provide access to fresh produce.
The Magoffin County Farmers Market sold over $15,000 of fresh produce and goods in the 2023 season. With over $6,000 of those sales supported by the Kentucky Double Dollars grant and the Senior and WIC Voucher grants. We had 14 vendors in 2023 and hope to continue to grow in the upcoming years.
