Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership – 4-H Youth Development

Plan of Work: McCracken County Residents and Youth Acquiring Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The McCracken County 4-H Youth Development program hosted the second annual 4-H Santa’s Elves Workshop in conjunction with the local school system’s scheduled winter break. This annual event provides youth in the community the opportunity to engage in a variety of creative arts as well as participate in activities that increase communication skills. Participants completed multiple projects throughout the day that encompassed Science, Engineering and Technology, horticulture, and culinary arts skills. After completing the projects, the youth engaged with community members at a nearby assisted living center by delivering cards and leading the residents in holiday season songs.

Participants in this program included new and returning 4-H members.  In total, twenty-four youth and volunteers participated in the day. Those volunteers included three youth and one adult volunteer. Five McCracken County Extension Agents, encompassing all program areas, and two program assistants provided leadership throughout the event. In total, there were twenty-seven females and four males in attendance. The demographic breakdown for this group was 87% white, 10% African American, and 3% Asian.

The McCracken County Senior Nutrition Education Assistant also gave youth participants a healthy eating demonstration. Participants received a copy of a Chop Chop magazine to take home. These magazines include nutritionally sound recipes, encouraging families to eat healthy during the holidays.

Concluding the day, parents and youth participants expressed their enjoyment of the program. One youth participant stated, “I had a great day and made new friends. I am excited to give my family members what I made today.”. One parent remarked, “I am thankful that the Cooperative Extension Service provided a day of activity while my children are on a school break.”.
