Leadership Starts at the Grassroots Level

The problem: Agriculture, like any industry needs leaders to promote it so that it continues to grow.

The educational program response: In 2012,Muhlenberg County corn, soybean, and wheat farmer Brent Gatton, approached this agent about participating in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture Food and Environment program known as (KALP) Kentucky Ag Leadership Program. His nomination to participate in the two year leadership program was successful.


The participants/target audience: The agriculture industry was his main focus. He wanted to make a difference in the grain crops industry.

Program impact or participant response. Upon his completion of the program, he became active in local agriculture oriented organizations. He served on the Muhlenberg County Extension Council, Chair of the Muhlenberg County Phase I  Agricultural Development Council and Chair of the Muhlenberg County Farm Bureau Federation. While serving as the chair of the local Farm Bureau Federation, he became a member of the Kentucky Soybean Association Board and a Kentucky representative to the United Soybean Board. He served as president of the Kentucky Soybean Association while still serving as one of three Kentucky representatives to the United Soybean Board. He is currently serving on the United Soybean Board Executive Committee as the treasurer.
