Beginner adult sewing classSecond Saturday Sewing Studio  The problem  As a result of COVID 19 and the isolation of our citizens, the Calloway County Cooperative Extension Service, the Family and Consumer Science agent, and the Master Clothing Volunteers, in the summer of 2023, planned to offer the citizens of Calloway County an adult beginner sewing class as a way to engage the community in an educational, creative project and to reconnect socially.  It had been several years since an adult sewing class had been offered in this county.   A marketing flyer outlining the class details was posted on the county Cooperative Extension Service website, in various retail establishments and on Facebook.

The educational program response  The Master clothing volunteers planned a pajama making class for the first adult sewing class to be offered.  The response was overwhelming with 17 interested men and women signing up for the first class.  As a result of the immense interest, our county Master Clothing Volunteers recruited the Area Master Clothing Volunteers to help with the instructing and teaching of our first class. After that class, there was still an interest in more adult sewing classes.  Two more adult pajama sewing classes were scheduled and a total of 16 more adults participating, with the MCVs were instructing the classes.

The participants/target audience  The targeted audience of the sewing class was the citizens of our community.

Program impact or participant response.  As a result of the adult sewing classes, more classes were requested and a brand new sewing class was initiated.  The Second Saturday Sewing Studio was born, held every second Saturday of the month, with basic sewing skills highlighted in different monthly projects.  To date 3 Second Saturday Sewing Studio classes have been held, with the MCVs taking lead in the educational and creative projects.  A total of 56 individuals have attended classes learn more sewing skills and continue to give input as to future classes to be offered. According to an evaluation held after the December Second Saturday Sewing Studio class, 3 participants have reported to have taught other people to sew.
