Plan of Work: Accessing Nutritious Foods
Outcome: Initial Outcome
The Mercer County FCS Agent partnered with the Mercer County Horticulture Agent and Senior NEP Assistant to offer a Halloween themed family fun and educational night all about PUMPKINS.
The program was geared towards families to encourage family fun without screens or distractions. The NEP Assitant prepared simple, healthy foods which included pumpkin in the recipe, the FCS Agent created a fun infographic all about the benefits of eating pumpkin, ways to preserve pumpkin and how to roast pumpkin seeds. The Horticulture Agent provided all participants with a pumpkin to carve and told a family friendly version of Stingy Jack and the orgins of Jack O Lanterns.
The Agents and NEP Assistant dressed as scarecrows and families were encouraged to attend in costume as well. The program participation was full and several parents commented on
- Children with sensory issues being okay to carve the pumpkin in the fun and safe enviornment
- Picky eaters trying new recipes
This program will be a yearly staple in Mercer County
