Plan of Work: Increase best practices for urban agriculture, natural resources & local food systems

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Many downtown Frankfort residents face difficulties in accessing fresh and high-quality produce, as the nearest grocery store is more than 3.5 miles away. To address this challenge, the Franklin County Farmer’s Market and Franklin County Cooperative Extension Service have collaborated to improve the food access for low-income households in Frankfort.

The Farmer's Market has seen a remarkable growth in sales and customers, reaching over $610,000 from more than 60 local producers, a 40% increase over the last 2 years. The market provided 106 shopping opportunities through diversified options such as online orders, curbside pickups, 15 workplace deliveries sites, and income-adjusted Food Shares. 75 of these events were downtown and drew tens of thousands of people with cooking demos, live music, ids activities, and hot food. Moreover, the market has enhanced its outreach to SNAP, WIC, and Senior FMNP, Double Dollars, Food Pantry, & Fresh Rx programs, more than $50,000 of additional local food purchases. The market has provided over $10,000 worth of local food served in school meals, and $10,000 of fresh produce for pregnant mothers. Furthermore, the market has continued its monthly Kid’s Day, where children can enjoy activities, live animals, and $2 tokens to buy fruits and vegetables.

The Franklin County Farmers Market and Franklin Co Extension Service have stepped up their efforts to provide a convenient, healthy, and local food option for downtown Frankfort residents, especially after the closure of the small downtown grocery store. They aim to keep expanding their services and reach more residents every year.
