Many citizens in Clark County love adding fresh cut flowers to their home during the summer season. Often times these flowers can be found at the local farmers market, or even handed to them from a neighbor. Sometimes that come already arranged in a bouqet, other times they are individual and need to be arranged. Some people want the cut flowers, but can't make it to the market to purchase them or even can't afford them. A few citizens even expressed the desire to learn how to grow cut flowers and learn how to make simple arrangements to be able to take them to hospitals and nursing homes to help brighten moods of the patients. Clark County Extension Horticulture saw an opportunity to do a small 2 part series on Cut Flowers. The first class was on Growling Cut Flowers. More than 60 people attended this class and took home seeds to attempt to grow on their own. For the 2nd part, Clark Extension partnered with one of the Agriculture teachers from George Rogers Clark High School to teach 2 sessions on Arranging Cut Flowers. Majority of the participants from the first class returned to now learn how to arrange cut flowers, with a few bringing some of the flowers they had grown themselves from the seed provided to them. IN a survey after the classes, 100% of respondents said they felt more confident in their abilities to grow and arrange cut flowers, with 60% of those having enough confidence in their abilities to be able to share arrangements with sick and elderly.
