Major Program: Health

Plan of Work: Improve physical and mental health

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In the fall of 2023, the Bell County Extension office held two Family Day Out events in the county. One event was held in Pineville while the other was in Middlesboro. The events were in parks that were closely related to public housing, with the idea that extension programs could reach an audience that was not familiar with our programming. This was an all reasonable efforts approach as both parks were well within walking distance from public housing. Included at the events were healthy snacks and water and a story book walk that families could participate in. Several stations were set up under pavilions that allowed the participants to complete at their own pace. Those stations included exercise activities, building a windowsill garden kit, building their own healthy trail mix, different craft options along with identifying animal tracks and pelts. Each event was attended by over 30 people. The attendees included those familiar with extension programming, but the majority were individuals that were not involved or knew about our diverse programming areas. This led to several Cloverbud aged children (ages 5-8) to get involved in after school Cloverbuds Clubs. These youth are now regular attendees at club meetings each month. These events also led to recruitment of 4-H Camp attendees and potential livestock club leader. One parent stated, “I didn’t know you guys even existed. My kids will definitely be getting involved with you!” The events were an overall success due to the amount of the previously unreached population and the continuation of attendees participating in Bell County Extension programming.
