Author: David Gabbard

Planning Unit: Lincoln County CES

Major Program: Agriculture & Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Water Quality, Nutrient and Natural Resources Best Management Practice

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In November the Owen County 4-H Agent hosted two events focused on wildlife and natural resources.

The first event was a Trapping Basics Program, the Owen County 4-H Agent brought in a guest speaker, professional Hunter/Trapper, a native Owen Countian, and 4-H Parent. The speaker came in to lead this program and spoke to 25 individuals (youth and parents). These youth learned why trapping was important for habitat and wildlife management, wildlife populations, and possible monetary incentives.

The second event was collaboration among Owen County 4-H, and  The Kentucky Department of Fish and WIldlife Resources. This event was a Hunter Education Course. This event is an 8 hour long educational program led by KDFWR teaching youth how to safely hunt, from land navigation, firearm/archery safety, treestand safety, and much more. There were participants ranging in ages from 9-75 years old, families, etc doing this together. There were 80+ participants from all over central/ northern KY that attended, and we are planning another one for March of 2024.
