From Guessing Game to Growth Guide: Soil Sampling Success in Carter County

Author: Rebecca Konopka

Planning Unit: Carter County CES

Major Program: Soil testing

Plan of Work: Livestock and Forage Production and Marketing

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Carter County boasts a rich agricultural heritage, but many farmers still sometimes rely on intuition and tradition to guide their nutrient management decisions. This often leads to over- or under-application of fertilizers, impacting both crop yields and the environment.

That's why the Carter County Extension Service encourages farmers to utilize soil sampling services.    Currently, the Carter County Soil Conservation District pays for soil testing for local residents through a grant.

The ANR agent works with local farmers and homeowners on how to collect samples and then strives to provide timely and accurate results.  The agent also created a handout that provides information on understanding soil sample recommendations.

Participation: In 2022, fifty-seven farmers and/or homeowners submitted 162 soil samples, while 55 clientele submitted 135 samples during 2023.   A wide range of clientele are using the services which is evident by the type of tests requested:

Row Crops: 38

Hay/Pastures: 153

Gardens: 70

Home Lawns & Landscapes: 17

Commercial Horticulture & Turf: 9

Wildlife Food Plots: 10

Financial Gains: Farmers who implement the recommendations can see increased yields and/or lower input costs which leads to additional farm income.

Environmental Stewardship: By applying fertilizer only where and when needed, farmers and homeowners can reduce nutrient runoff and protect local waterways.

The success of soil sampling in Carter County is a testament to the power of collaboration between farmers, homeowners, Extension personnel, and the Soil Conservation District. By providing science-based solutions and hands-on support, the program is providing farmers and homeowners with information that empowers them to make informed decisions that benefit their bottom line and the environment, one soil test at a time.
