Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

According to research published in the Journal for Rural Studies, “Rural volunteering is more than simply the delivery of front-line activities and services. Volunteering is a social activity, critical to the societal fabric of rural communities and the wellbeing of residents” (Davies et. al 2021). Over the course of an 8-week program in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, 40 dedicated individuals in Greenup County and Boyd Counties developed a deep understanding of their community. Their commitment to learning was not just an intellectual exercise; it was a powerful call to action as participants were challenged to address pressing needs identified during their learning sessions.

One inspiring outcome saw 10 local businesses join forces to support Hope's Place, a children's advocacy center with a focus on promoting a safe environment for victims. The businesses collected 31 blankets and toys, ensuring that each child entering the center received a comforting blanket and a stuffed animal. In another impactful initiative, a team rallied to gather clothing and food for food banks in Greenup and Boyd Counties, embodying the spirit of community care.

Yet another team near the Greenup County jail amplified their efforts to assist inmates upon release, emphasizing the importance of fostering a pathway to gainful employment during reentry into society. Beyond these individual endeavors, the participants were inspired to spark change within their workplaces by encouraging their coworkers to actively participate, amplifying the ripple effect of positive change.

The Greenup County Extension Service can take pride in these outcomes. The program's ability to catalyze meaningful change through collaboration, empathy, and community engagement exemplifies the vital role of volunteers in fostering a brighter, more compassionate future for Greenup County.
