The Greenup County Extension Family & Consumer Sciences Agent and the Greenup County Library System partnered to assist in educating youth in Greenup County involved in Homeschool Co-ops. The series of classes meetings once a month and is divided into two groups by age. The classes are designed to enrich culinary skills while also fostering independence and communication skills with other children in the group. During the classes students were involved in hands-on experiences to enrich these skills.
The Greenup County Family & Consumer Sciences Agent lead the youth knife safety skills, kitchen safety, measuring skills, how to read a recipe, handwashing, and the basics of cooking. An average of 30 students participated in the enrichment sessions provided by the Extension Office. Each session the students built on their skills and on created recipes together encouraging the youth to try new foods. The Extension Office sends publications and recipes for each student to share with their families.
Each student stated that they were glad that they were participating in the sessions and had gained information that they had never learned before, and had put their new knowledge to use. One of the students stated “she loved coming to cooking class because she and her Dad always made the recipes together at home. They had been grocery shopping together to purchase supplies to make them at home to share with the rest of her family."
