Success StoryStanton Elementary's Season of Giving

Stanton Elementary's Season of Giving

Author: Emilee Bryant

Planning Unit: Powell County CES

Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership – 4-H Youth Development

Plan of Work: Nutrition and Food Systems

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

4th Grade 4-H members at Stanton Elementary School identified a need for other students, families and even pets in the community to have access to a well-balanced meal, and food security over the upcoming holiday break.  After identifying these needs, 4-H club members organized a "Holiday Food Drive for People and Pets".  The members designed a flyer to promote their food drive, and developed a plan to collect things from a variety of food groups through the program.

Club members tasked each grade at the school (K-5) to collect a different food item.  4-H members also worked with the Parent-Teacher Association to deliver the food to a local food bank and the Powell County Animal Shelter.

Over 400 food items were collected by the members in 2 weeks.  This service learning project was a wonderful way for 4th grade students to "give back" to their community and include the whole school.  The current 4th grade students hope that 4-H school clubs after them continue this project annually at Stanton Elementary.
