The problem

The successful 4-H Sewing Series, under the leadership of volunteer Stacey, grew to 8 4-H'ers this fall. One of the participant's mothers assisted with the youth each week. This was a 6 part series, the youth made a hair scrungie, pillowcase, and ended the series with a pair of holiday elastic waist pants.  The youth all felt much more capable and comfortable using a sewing machine after the series ended.

The educational program response

Stacey used the 4-H Sewing Curriculum when choosing projects.  She also taught the youth how to make a roll up toiletry case as a practice project.

The participants/target audience

There were 8 4-H'ers in this series, ranging in age from 9 to 13. The older youth were also able to complete their projects and assist the younger ones.

Program impact or participant response.

This 6 week sewing series has grown from 6 to 8 4-H'ers. The next series will be a level 1 beginner and will move into a Level 2 Advanced series in the fall with the same 4-H'ers. New participants who have not taken the class will be given the opportunity to learn from Stacy this spring.
