Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development - Family and Consumer Science

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Identified as a need in the Alexandria area, in early November the community of Alexandria came together to host an event for families of children with special needs. Campbell County Extension participated in Sensory Santa at the Fairgrounds, with the help of Campbell County’s Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent, Campbell County 4-H hosted a table where attendees we able to make an ornament as a part of the day's activities. In collaboration with several other community partners families were able to spend the day together celebrating the holidays. Fourteen families attended with a total participation of nearly 50.

One family shared” The Sensory Santa event meant everything to my family. My daughter has autism and often becomes overstimulated in crowds and at loud events. Having the opportunity to have one-on-one time with Santa was the best. It was a toned-down event that my family could enjoy with minimal meltdowns while still getting to enjoy the holiday season. I hope to participate in the event for years to come.”

The collaboration between Campbell County Extension, KTL Therapy, US Bank, Campbell County Library, We Rock the Spectrum, and others can hopefully be continued to provide this event and others for years to come.
