Major Program: Build Engaged and Empowered Communities – General
Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work
Outcome: Initial Outcome
The problem - Lewis County Senior Citizens are not disaster ready.
The educational program response - 35 Lewis County senior citizens are now Disaster Ready!
We collaborated with Lowe's of Maysville, Ky to provide basic essentials for a disaster preparedness bag. This included a 5 gallon bucket, roll of toilet paper, flashlight, blanket, hand sanitizer, toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitizing wipes, beef stew, vienna sausage, dog food and cat food, plus various disaster readiness materials, personal contact card (2 copies).....1 to be carried in wallet and other to be placed in disaster bag and a string backpack labeled with UK Cooperative Extension Services (Lewis County Office), address of office and phone number.
The participants/target audience - 35 senior citizens who are regular attendees to the Lewis County Senior Citizens Center located on Front Street, Vanceburg, Ky
Other partners (if applicable) - Lowe's of Maysville, Ky, Alex Halsey from Lewis County Health Department, Lewis County Judge Executive George Sparks and Lewis County Mayor Dane Blankenship
Program impact or participant response - The seniors were excited to talk about how they should be ready for a disaster. They discussed the importance of someone knowing the information about them e.g. medications, phone numbers, etc. listed on the contact cards and keeping the Disaster Bag in a location with quick access should they need to grab it and go. We discussed replacing an item if you have had to use it (example....toilet paper or beef stew, etc.)
