4-H Trailblazers Horse Project

Author: Katie Mills

Planning Unit: Christian County CES

Major Program: Agriculture & Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Nurturing the development of local economic and community growth.

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

4-H Trailblazers Horse Project is a growing success in Christian County starting with eight youth in the fall of 2022 to eighteen youth fall of 2023. This is a project that we want to continue to grow and succeed with Christian County being an equine community and the Christian County Extension Office housing an Expo Center for the youth to utilize to ride. In the past year, we have gained two new 4-H Horse Project leaders that have a passion for the industry, both working at the Oak Grove Equestrian Center and always striving to help grow the youth involved in equine.

The goal of the project is to have youth continue to return to the meetings and have the opportunity to compete in the State Horse Contest in events such as hippology, skill-a-thon, or demonstration. Each meeting consists of an hour of hands-on learning without being on horseback. The next hour is for youth with horses to be able to have a dry, warm space to ride while utilizing the leader’s knowledge to help grow in their riding skills. Eventually we hope that some of the youth will compete at the Kentucky State 4-H Horse Show in Louisville, KY. The 4-H Trailblazers Horse Project is always open to welcoming new members.
