Youth learn about the life cycle through butterflies

Planning Unit: Floyd County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Youth Engaging in Science and ANR

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Over the past several years Floyd County 4-H and ANR program has offered our chick incubation program to our schools for many years. According to Early Childhood News, “Children acquire scientific knowledge by ‘construction’ not by instruction (Kamii & Lee-Katz, 1983). They must create an explanation of observed phenomena or the outcomes of the experiments internally—an explanation that holds personal meaning” (Trawick-Smith, p. 203). With this in mind and the program being such a success we decided to try something new.

The Floyd County 4-H and ANR Agent partnered together to provide the opportunity for twenty-six classrooms in grades Preschool-2nd across the county the means to learn and observe the life cycle of a butterfly through an entomology project. This hands-on project was first introduced to 10 classrooms in the 2016-2017 school year, and has continued to grow. One 1st grade teacher had this to say about the program. “All of my students and I loved this project, it gets them really excited about science. They learn so many skills during the process such as: observation, art, writing, and even patience! We really appreciate you offering us the opportunity to do this program and Thank you so much!” Floyd 4-H and ANR plan to continue to this project and hopes to expand to even more classrooms in the coming year, and possibly add other aspects to the life cycle and entomology projects.
