Youth Participates in KY 4-H Communications Contest

Author: Kimberly Ragland

Planning Unit: Boyle County CES

Major Program: Communications

Plan of Work: Acquisition of Life Skills

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Providing youth with the ability to enhance and develop communication skills is of great importance in Kentucky.  The development of communications skills is one of the preeminent skills necessary to grow as an individual, a community member and a leader. This in turn creates a solid foundation for positive youth development (Jones, K. R. 2006)

This year 181 youth participated in State Communications Day including one speech competitor from Boyle County.  These youth have gained knowledge in public speaking through county and area grouping contests.  They have completed research on a topic of their choice, written a speech or demonstration and have presented a speech or demonstration.  Of these youth, 168 youth demonstrated effective presentation skills by attaining a blue ribbon, which is a score of 80-100.  In order to earn a spot at the State competition, the Boyle County youth participated in his classroom speech contest, won the county speech contest, and won the Ft. Harrod Area contest.
