Author: Linda McClanahan

Planning Unit: Garrard County CES

Major Program: Equine

Plan of Work: Agriculture and Horticulture

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Equine Agents Working Group with our equine extension specialist worked to redefine and expand the Equine Farm and Facilities Expo. The intent this year was to get back to more of the original focus of this event which is to assist the small to medium sized acreage horse farm owner select equipment, design facilities and adopt practices which improve their farm operation. This year, we also expanded the speakers to include topics on farm safety, equipment safety and mental health. These topics addressed issues that significantly affect the farm population. It was important for us to cover tractor and equipment safety, specifically with rotary mowers, as this use is widespread on the small to medium sized horse farms. Attendees indicated they gained knowledge of proper sizing of tractors and equipment for different operations, equipment safety, mental health resources and facility layout.
