According to Keep America Beautiful, a national nonprofit which provides expertise, programs and resources to help people end littering, improve recycling, and restore communities, there are approximately 2,857 pieces of litter per mile of both roadway and waterway in the United States. Rockcastle County 4-H Youth Development Agent, Alyssa Cox, partnered with the Rockcastle County Fiscal Court, the Rockcastle County Solid Waste Division, and Eastern Kentucky PRIDE (Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment) to clean up 30 miles of roadway.
Eastern Kentucky PRIDE and the Rockcastle County Fiscal Court teamed up to offer nonprofit 501(c)(3) groups $100.00 per every mile of roadway that they cleaned in Rockcastle County. This program has incentivized many groups to take action and help beautify our community.
In an effort to raise funds and make a positive community impact, the Rockcastle County 4-H Shooting Sports team and their families gathered to clean up 30 miles of Rockcastle County roadway. 36 participants spent an entire day cleaning up roadside throughout the county. At the end of the day, there were a total of 84 bags of trash to be delivered to the Rockcastle County Solid Waste Division.
As a result of their efforts, the Rockcastle County 4-H Shooting Sports team raised $3,000 to purchase much needed supplies for the upcoming season.
