Physical inactivity is a significant challenge among adults over the age of 65. Kentucky’s population is no exception to this problem. In fact, Kentucky ranks 43 out of 50 for physical activity, according to americashealthrankings.org.  This is troubling because we know that lack of exercise puts individuals at higher risk for chronic diseases like Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease and certain types of cancer. It is also known that lack of exercise can increase the risk of falls in older people.

To address this issue, the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent in Garrard County has implemented Bingocize. This program combines the fun of Bingo with simple, yet effective physical activity. The program also educates on nutrition in one of the units. This was discussed among the class in between exercise and playing bingo.

Although close to 20 people participated at varying times, 9 people completed the entire program and filled out a pre and post survey which provided great information on the impact of the class. As a result of the program, 100% of the surveyed participants reported feeling more comfortable talking with their health care provider about their medications and other possible risks for falls. 100% of participants reported feeling more comfortable increasing their physical activity. 100% of participants reported an increased satisfaction with life, and 100% reported that they would recommend the program to a friend.

Overall, the program was a great success, and participants were immediately interested in participating in future Bingocize programs and have since returned!
