Major Program: Camping
Plan of Work: Cultivating community leadership, engagement and pride through educational and experiential learning.
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
According to the American Camping Association, “Camp provides children with a community of caring adults who nurture experiential education that results in self-respect and appreciation for human value. All of the outcomes — self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem, leadership, and self-respect — build personal competencies.” This has proven to be true within the Kentucky 4-H Camping Program with youth growing in their responsibilities, having a positive adult leader, and becoming a repeat camper year after year. Within the Kentucky 4-H Camping program, there was a total attendance of 13,635; total campers of 10,701, total volunteers of 2,707. This number continues to grow and give youth a safe week to be for the summer.
The 2022 Christian County 4-H Camping Program was a successful year hosting 123 Campers (ages 8 – 15), 14 Teen Leaders (ages 16 and 17), 9 Adult Leaders. There was a collective of 1,840 hours donated from the leaders of Christian County to ensure that 4-H Camp was able to take place. The volunteer leaders donated more than just their time, but also their paid leave, energy and caring for many campers that may not have that at home. Each volunteer attended a training to help them be successful for the week and prepared for outdoor adventures.
The week at Christian County 4-H Camp is a time for youth to explore other adventures and find if they have another outlet or passion. Some of the classes the youth are able to attend are high ropes, swimming, canoeing, fishing, rifle, agriculture, nature, recreation, low ropes, archery and more. They get to spend most of their day outside and are able to meet new friends from five different counties or from other areas of Christian County. 4-H Camp is a week of fun, excitement and joy for the youth.
