Major Program: Health

Plan of Work: Developing Youth Into Productive Citizens

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Adair County Cooperative Extension Service collaborated with the Progressive Farmer Foundation, Adair County School System, local businesses, community agencies, and local leaders to conduct the 21st Farm and Home Safety Days. Fifty adult and Fifty Teen volunteers contributed to the program’s success.

More than 200 1st-grade and 200 5th-grade students attended the interactive safety booths that addressed fire, tractor, ATV, water, sun, first aid, livestock, health, equipment, substance abuse, and general safety over a two-day period. A pre-survey showed that 94% of the youth who participated in the Safety Day program had never used a fire extinguisher. Each participant received training on the proper way to use and got to use a fire extinguisher. 72% of the participants stated that they never or only sometimes wear a helmet when riding on an ATV. All participants received training on what is the best size helmet for their age and what can happen if they do not wear a helmet.

Among the adults participating in Farm and Home Safety Days, 83% identified one or more changes they plan to adapt to reduce the risk of accidents in their home or farm.   All participants learned how to use and use a fire extinguisher that day.
