Thriving in 4-H: Marshall County 4-Hers in Action – Volume 1, Issue 1

The 4-H Thriving Model is the science-grounded in practice that describes the “magic” of 4-H.  This model takes the science to explain the growth/thriving  process of youth because of their 4-H involvement.  Moving from the Developmental Context (4-H Programs) to Youth Thriving (Social, Emotional and Cognitive Learning) to Development Outcomes (Positive Youth Development) to Long-Term Outcomes.  As outlined in a 9/6/23 publication by 

The developmental context of the model is accomplished through high-quality positive youth development programs (Arnold, 2018). Sparks are defined as a “passion for a self-identified interest or skill, or a capacity that metaphorically lights a fire in an adolescent’s life, providing energy, joy, purpose, and direction” (Scales et al., 2011, p. 264).  It’s project work conducted at local level by the 4-Hers whether through individual study and/or 4-H Day Camps and workshops where “sparks” can be lit.

 In Marshall County 4-H, youth can participate in 4-H Day Camps or Workshops coordinated by the Extension Program Assistant and volunteers with oversight by the Marshall County 4-H Youth Development Agent.    The youth also are introduced to various project topics in 4-H Club meetings and/or programs provided by the Marshall County Master Gardeners.  It is from these engagements where youth may complete a project for exhibit in the Marshall County A&I Fair.

 Youth who compete in the 4-H Division and are County Class Champions qualify their 4-H exhibits for the Kentucky State Fair.  In the 2023 State Fair 4-H Division, Marshall County had three youth to be Class Champions in their respective categories of Home Environment-Accessory for the Home; Horticulture—Dish Garden; and Arts—Two Point Perspective.  The Art exhibit was a project completed during one of the 4-H Summer Day Camps.  The Home Environment winner completed their project on personal time, but final touches were a collaborative effort with the 4-Her, the Extension Program Assistant, and 4-H Agent. 

 As for the Dish Garden entry, not only did this 4-Her win class champion at the local level but was also recognized as the Junior Overall Youth Grand Champion.  He was very diligent and worked to improve upon the previous year’s entry especially for state level competiton.  After visiting the 2023 State Fair with his family, the 4-Her is already planning his horticulture exhibit for next year’s fair.  This demonstrates the portion of the 4-H Thriving Model known as “Youth Thriving” with “Openness to Challenge and Discovery.” The 4-H Thriving Model is live and “growing” in Marshall County!
