Power of Produce

Author: Alexandra Sallie

Planning Unit: Bath County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Plan of Work: Active Living and Health Promotions

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Children need daily fruits and vegetables to support healthy growth. Yet data from the 2021 National Survey of Children’s Health show that nearly 1 out of every 2 children aged 1- 5 years who live in Kentucky do not eat a fruit and/or vegetable every day.  A collaboration between the Bath County FCS, AG, and 4-H agents, along with the school Family Resource and Youth Center coordinators and local library, planned out a 4-week program, called Power of Produce. The goal of this program is to introduce youth to new fruits and vegetable's, along with learning the importance of healthy eating and physical activity. The Power of Produce program is a 4-week series, one day a week during the Farmers Market. During the program, children within the community can come to do a taste test, partake in a recreational physical activity and learn an agriculture lesson. Each booth, allows the youth to earn $2 POP bucks that they can then spend at the Farmers Market on local produce. In 2023, the program reached 56 children total.
