Community Service Project

Author: Glenna Wooten

Planning Unit: Perry County CES

Major Program: Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association

Plan of Work: Leadership Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Kentucky Extension Homemakers under the leadership of the Family and Consumer Sciences agent in Perry County spend time each month to give back to their communities. They meet together at the Cooperative Extension Office under the direction of the Master Clothing volunteer to sew baby blankets for newborns at the local hospital, sew turbans for cancer patients at the ARH UK Markey Cancer Center and ARH Infusion Suite, make port and underarm pillows for patients receiving cancer treatments and knit baby hats and mitten sets for newborns. Twenty homemakers made 301 baby blankets, knitted 533 baby hats, sewed 101 turbans, made 58 underarm pillows, stitched 78 port pillows, and made 24 sets of mittens. Just in this community service project alone, these homemakers volunteered 1569 hours. These homemakers are learning leadership skills and sharing their knowledge with others.  4-H teens have attended  a workday and learned  to make port pillows and underarm pillows and assisted the homemakers with stuffing the pillows and sewing the pillows closed.
