Grazing in an Effective and Economical Way

Author: Brittany Brewer

Planning Unit: Scott County CES

Major Program: Forages

Plan of Work: Commodity Production and Instruction

Outcome: Initial Outcome

With inflation and extreme weather farmers are having to learn how to adapt and change. Many farmers in the Bluegrass region rely on forages. Whether they raise livestock, bale hay, or use cover crop techniques forages can be involved. Farmers have had to adapt new management strategies and perspectives to raise quality livestock and still make a living.

In response to these problems, the Scott County Extension Office and the Scott County Beef Improvement Association partner together to provide a hands on field day at Robert Hall's Farm. Hall is a forward thinker and has adapted grazing programs and ideas ahead of his time.

40 people came out to be apart of the field day. Talks where given by UK specialists Dr. Jeff Lehmkuhler and Dr. Greg Halich. Participants were livestock producers, hay producers, and people with interests in cover crops.

Participants provided immediate feedback about how they enjoyed the on farm hands-on experience. They all commented that they learned something new and hope to implement one of the strategies talked about on their own operations.
