Plan of Work: Active Living and Health Promotions

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Pumpkin Days were held on September 26th and 27th, 2023, at the Robinson Center for Appalachian Resource Sustainability. Youth in grades Preschool, HeadStart, Kindergarten, and First grades attended from multiple counties. Each class rotated through educational stations, experienced a petting zoo, played games, sampled recipes, and took a hayride to the pumpkin patch where they chose a pumpkin to take home. Nutrition Assistants, Program Assistants, and county Agents from different counties made SNAP approved pumpkin recipes for everyone in attendance to sample. Each morning groups were greeted by Wally Cat and had their photos taken.

Youth in attendance were able to try new foods for the first time! There were several positive comments made throughout the day by the youth participants. First time hayride and pumpkin patch exposure occurred for many of our youth. This event always provides positive learning experiences combined with a safe place to try new and exciting things. A petting zoo was added this year and managed by the members of 4-H and FFA from the region. These groups of students brought their project animals to share about each one with the youth. The students in attendance were able to pet the animals as well.

Not only did the 4-H and FFA students present, Kentucky River Health Department educator, Hannah Hogan was able to provide education as well. Collectively we reached 1281 youth, parents, and educators who were present for both days.

Jackson City’ Kindergarten and first grades were able to attend. One child reported that “they loved getting to take a photo with Wally Cat.” Another student was so excited to see the animals at the petting zoo and stated, “this is my first time petting a horse!”

Teachers enjoyed the day and were grateful for the numerous opportunities provided for their students. A teacher from Breathitt Elementary stated.

“Thank you all for an amazing day. This was the first time I was able to participate with our school. We were excited to hear about this opportunity from our local extension office. My students acquired knowledge from so many wonderful sessions! We cannot wait to go back again next year!”

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Elementary Teacher at BCS

My kindergarten class attended Pumpkin Days at the Robinson Center and it was so much fun! In years past the stations were all under one tent and it was difficult to maneuver around with so many classes participating. This year the whole event moved to the other side of the field and stations were placed under several tents making it easier and less noisy for my students. There were taste testing stations, games, songs, and stories. The students picked meeting Wally Cat and the hayride to pick their pumpkins as the top favorites. Altogether, it was a wonderful day. Thank you to those who made this event possible, and we look forward to next year.
