Grain Bin Rescue Equipment Training

Author: Beau Neal

Planning Unit: Woodford County CES

Major Program: Grains

Plan of Work: Disaster and Emergency Response

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Grain bin entrapment is a serious issue every year with farmers across the country.  Lives are lost every season due to either falling in by accident, or stepping through a "crusted" over spot inside the grain bin.  With the cooperation of the Fayette County Ag Development Council, and Fayette County Farm Bureau who provided the much needed grain bin rescue equipment, the Lexington Fire Department was properly trained on how to use it given an on-farm emergency.  Grain farmers around the county took part, but mostly it was the Lexington Fire Dept. who took away from this opportunity, and from now will have the resources and know-how in case a Fayette County producer is trapped in the future.  Dale Dobson with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture did the training! The program was very well received by both Lexington firefighters and farmers alike.
