Chute-side BQCA

Planning Unit: Franklin County CES
Major Program: Beef
Plan of Work: Constructing novel communication channels through Extension programming with inclusive and diverse audiences
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Beef producers need BQCA certification not just to meet certain cost-share and program requirements but also to know how to be good stockmen and properly handle their cattle. While many have been trained and certified, there are still those that are new producers or otherwise haven't yet for various reasons.
The Franklin and Henry County ANR agents teamed up with KSU to offer a chute-side hands-on training, primarily targeting KSU's audience of small, limited resource producers.
KSU's audience of small, limited resource producers as well as anyone else wanting or needing certification attended the evening event of both classroom and hands-on trainings.
Over 20 producers from 5 counties participated in the training, including many high school Vo-Ag students. In addition to the BQCA chute-side experience they toured the handling facility with Specialist's from UK Engineering and Bio-technology discussing layout and details. At the KSU Center for Sustainability they could practice vaccinations and ear tagging with the KSU Vet and ruminant specialist on a bovine dummy.
