According to Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “Cooking is a valuable skill that teaches children about nutrition and food safety, as well as building math, science, literacy and fine motor skills.” However, with limited access to grocery stores in Clay County, busy schedules and convivence of fast food restaurants, many youth are at a disadvantage when it comes to gaining skills in the kitchen and acquiring knowledge about the importance of nutrition. When assessing the needs and concerns of the community with the Clay County Extension Council, nutrition and cooking skills were listed as a need. The 4-H Clay County 4-H program implemented enrichment programs and an after-school cooking club to provide youth the opportunity to gain basic cooking skills and learn the importance of nutrition.
Clubs/enrichment programs are held monthly with approximately twelve members in the 4-H Cooking Club and forty-eight school enrichment members. During each club meeting and enrichment program, 4-H curriculum is applied and members have the opportunity to learn food safety, basic cooking skills, sample nutritious foods, and learn the positive effects of establishing healthy eating habits. Youth also gained knowledge about MyPlate, and how this plays a vital role.
