Western Kentucky Master Naturalist Class

Our natural habitat is increasingly facing pressure from human expansion and growth, invasive species and climate change. People need to understand the changes that are occurring including significant declines in many bird species, insect species including honey and native bees, losses in the habitats and ecosystems needed to sustain wildlife and genetic diversity, along with the pressures of climate change. 

Twenty-eight people from across Kentucky completed the Western Kentucky Master Naturalist Class. They attended 3 weekends with both indoor and outdoor learning opportunities. Participants learned about Kentucky geology, archeology, botany, ecological concepts, invasive plants and insects, botany, aquatic resources, soils, climate and weather, ecoregions, geology, entomology, large game, native bees, environmental ethics, safety and health, citizen science, safety and health, and more. Activities included an evening kayak, a hike at Mantle Rock, visits to the Land Between the Lakes Planetarium, LBL Woodlands Nature Station, Hancock Biological Station, Wickliffe Mounds State Park and Ballard Wildlife Management Area. Expert speakers from across the state provided classroom education. Many have already begun volunteering for Kentucky outdoor organizations including Bernheim Forest, Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area and Mammoth Cave National Park. 

Organization of this program involved a collaboration between the University of Kentucky Forestry, Land Between the Lakes Woodland Nature Station and Lyon County Extension Service. All three were critical to making this program a success.

In their evaluations, participants indicated that they would like even more outdoor learning.
