Storybook Walk: On the Path to better Eating

Author: Renata Farmer

Planning Unit: Knox County CES

Major Program: Health

Plan of Work: Healthy in the Home

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the CDC, a recent report showed many Kentucky children ages 1 through 5 years old do not eat at least one fruit or vegetable each day. There are many reasons why children or other family members do not eat fruit or vegetables daily.  Increasing their access to quality nutrition is of utmost importance.

In response to this need, the Knox County 4-H, FCS, and ANR Extension Agents along with several community partners such as, the Knox County Farmers' Market and the Extension Program Councils, collaborated to create a Story Book Walk. This walk was held at the Knox County Extension Pavilion during the Farmers' Market. Children and families were able to walk around the track at the pavilion and read the book, “Up Down and Around."  This book focused on educating children and families on the way that produce is grown. Once they completed the loop and read the story, they then received a farmers' market token to purchase produce at the market.

As a result of this program:

  • 50 families were able to try produce from a local farmer
  • 30 families were able support a local farmer by purchasing their produce,
  • 50 families were educated on how produce was grown while engaging in physical activity during the walk.
