Equine Workshops out West

Author: Lindsay Heyvaert

Planning Unit: KSU Administration

Major Program: Equine

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The problem

Horses have been a common tool amongst farmers for generations. We no longer use them for work, but everyone enjoys them as companions. Horses are harder to keep than cow and most people forget that we cannot leave our horses alone in the fields for months on end. The issue is that horses in the area aren't being monitored as closely as they should. Some have even been noticeably neglected.

The educational program response

I want to teach people the most up to date ways of caring for our horses. Most people how have horses stay up to date on equine news and medications, but a lot do not. Whether is pure ignorance or misunderstanding, I want everyone to learn how to take care if their horses. I developed a series of workshops focused on equine health and care and have had three successful ones to date.

The participants/target audience

Participants are invited from all 10 mammoth cave counties. The target audience from that area is any equine enthusiast. (4H, horse owner, future horse owner, person who like horses)

Other partners (if applicable)

UK Extension helped with promoting and networking

Program impact or participant response.

In total, I have had 39 participants throughout  the 4 workshops with 1 more on the way. The audience is focused towards anyone who is interested in horses. Its mostly been equine trainers, owners, and 4H kids who attend my workshops. Their response has been great! The topics are of interest, they're beneficial, and people love to talk about horses and meet new horse people.
