The FCS Agent and FCS Team at the Laurel County Extension office decided to host a StoryWalk as a unique and engaging way to promote early literacy and physical activity among the children in their community. The CDC recommends that adolescents who are between the ages of 6-17 years of age, receive at least 6o minutes of physical activity a day. The FCS team recognized the potential of this innovative concept and were able to host this event for the 2nd year in a row that would leave a lasting impact on their young learners.
The book that was selected was called Memorial Day by Emma Carlson Berne. A course was designed for the StoryWalk at the Veteran’s Park located in London, KY. They strategically placed large, laminated pages from the book, ensuring that each page revealed a different part of the story. Throughout the path, community partners were set up with booths that promoted programs for youth, families, and incentive items that the families got to enjoy.
The impact of the StoryWalk quickly became evident. The children's enthusiasm for reading and the combination of physical movement and storytelling enhanced their understanding of the narrative and improved their comprehension skills. StoryWalk became a powerful tool in fostering a love for literature and promoting early literacy development.
Due to the overwhelming success and positive feedback, the FCS at the Laurel County Extension Office expanded the Story Walk program.
