Reaching New Heights: Hart County 4-H's Drone Program Soaring to Success

In the fall of 2022, the 4-H Agent met with a representative from Thoroughbred Solar, a company building a solar farm in Hart CountyThe objective of this meeting was twofold: to gain insights into the upcoming solar farm project and to establish a collaborative partnership between the company and the 4-H Progr


The 4-H Agent secured a substantial $5000 donation dedicated to the establishment of a new Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) program in Hart County. After discussions with the 4-H State Specialist for SET it was decided that Hart County would pilot a new drone curriculum will 11 other counties.  


The 4-H Agent recruited two new volunteers to complete the training along with current volunteer. The two new volunteers bring new insight into the 4-H program. One volunteer is a STEAM Teacher at Caverna Elementary and the other is the County Search & Rescue Assistant Chief who flew drones in the military. In May 2023, the three volunteers and the 4-H Agent successfully completed the training, ready to ignite a new wave of knowledge and enthusiasm among the youth of Hart County. 


Ten drones, complete with controllers, a comprehensive curriculum, an obstacle course, and seven Chromebooks were acquired, forming the foundation for a dynamic and immersive learning experience. The drones will be utilized by the 4-H Agent and volunteers at Caverna Elementary, Hart County High School, LeGrande Elementary, Cub Run Elementary and through an afterschool community club. Youth will learn basic flight principles, coding, problem-solving skills, and careers utilizing drone technology
