A smart phone app is now available to assist Kentucky Gardeners in planning their home vegetable garden. The SOW – A Planting Companion App was originally produced by Alabama Cooperative Extension and included growing information for Alabama and North Carolina. The second version, launched in May 2023, also includes information for Kentucky gardeners. The free app is available through Apple (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sow-a-planting-companion/id840347996), Google (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.aces.SOW&hl=en_US&gl=US&pli=1) or through your phone’s app store. Kentucky data is based on ID-128 – Home Vegetable Gardening in Kentucky. When the app is downloaded, the user is asked to enter their state and county so that growing information is customized to their USDA hardiness zone. The app has three main sections: My Garden, which lets the user plan one or more gardens including crop location, planned planting and harvest dates, with the option of having these dates entered into your phone’s calendar; a Journal, to allow the user to record information about their harvest; and a Library, which contains growing information such as recommended cultivars, planting depth and spacing, planting date, potential harvest date, and yield expectations on 36 popular vegetables for Kentucky. The app also gives the user access to their local county extension office web site where you can contact local staff with gardening questions.
