The Perry County Family and Consumer Sciences agent offered a monthly program for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. The focus this year has been on managing finances. Some of the topics have been Making the Food Dollar Go Further, Setting financial Goals, Teaching Children to Save Money,Planning Ahead for Emergencies, Planning Ahead for the Holidays, Save Money by Making Gifts and Home Decor, Save Money with One Pot Dishes and Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
100% of the participants attending indicated that they learned new information that they will use. 50% reported using the information to make their money go further by reducing food waste, and making gifts and decorations instead of purchasing them.
The most difficult ones reported by grandparents in making changes are teaching their grandchildren the importance of saving money and family discussions about spending money.
Financial education can be a difficult topic to teach as finances are a personal matter.
