Enjoying More Fruits and Vegetables

Planning Unit: Lawrence County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Lawrence County Nutrition Education Program (NEP) assistants promoted the importance of eating fruits and vegetables during lunch time at Louisa West Elementary School (LWES). To get the students’ attention, the NEP assistants dressed in fruit and vegetable costumes and talked with students as they went through the lunch line. NEP assistants discussed MyPlate and the importance of making half the plate fruits and vegetables. Several students went back through the line and chose another fruit or vegetable and ate those first. Because of the NEP assistants’ visit, one cafeteria employee stated, “The kids were conscious in identifying and eating fruits and vegetables during lunch.” The LWES principal stated, “Our children have greatly enjoyed the visits, especially when you are in costume!” In addition, the principal sent a letter to the NEP assistants stating that the LWES staff appreciate the NEP assistants teaching students about healthy eating choices and that their work greatly impacts families in Lawrence County.
