According to Kentucky County Health Rankings, Breckinridge County health facts reflect 39% adults are obese, 38% report a lack of physical activity, and 12% adults have diabetes. In addition, local healthcare and school professionals report an increase in youth diabetes in the county. In a continued effort to increase awareness and improve individual wellness, the Breckinridge County Extension Service Family and Consumer Science program continues to strengthen partnerships with the local healthcare providers, hospital, and the health department to provide educational learning and support for families living with diabetes.
The monthly support group resumed meetings in September 2023 post covid at the Extension Community Building and is once again a beneficial resource for families. The meetings provide learning sessions relating to A1C, diabetic medications, foot care, eye care, nutrition, physical activity, and food preparation while offering a caring support system. Guest speakers have included a local primary care physician, pediatrist, optometrist, cardiac care rehab assistant, yoga instructor and pharmacist. The hospital’s dietitian attends monthly to answer questions regarding meal planning. A nutritious recipe demonstration and sampling is provided by the FCS Agent to encourage an increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables. Extension publications and curriculum utilized include Plate it Up KY Proud!, the NEP calendar, Taking Ownership of Your Diabetes and American Diabetes Association resources. Average attendance has grown to 15 - 20 participants. Participants report an increased understanding of carbohydrates counting and one’s AIC number. Also, when asked if the group would like to take the summer off, the response was no, "we need the support for the summer holiday gatherings." The collaborative effort is providing a support system that fosters an environment of health and wellness for strengthening families in Breckinridge County.
