Major Program: Tobacco

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Kentucky is one of only 5 states left that have extension specialists devoted to tobacco applied research and extension efforts.  Kentucky leads the nation in production of burley and dark tobacco, and also produces considerable quantities of cigar wrapper styles of tobacco.  Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Connecticut have small pockets of tobacco production but provide little or no extension or research support for them.  Andy Bailey has conducted annual tobacco Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) trainings in Pennsylvania, and provides monthly consultation to growers in Wisconsin and Missouri, providing current research findings and production recommendations from Kentucky that can be translated to tobacco growers producing the same types of tobacco in other states.
