This year Scott County Extension programs collaborated on designing a three day collection of day camps for the Migrant Education program in Scott County. Family Consumer Sciences, Horticulture, Snap-Ed and 4-H combined their efforts to implement a program that would incorporate fun and education together for 50 youth. These youth ranged in age from 5 years old to 15 years of age. Separated into three groups, they rotated to each program area and participated in a verity of activities designed to teach a new skill and have fun while doing so. With the population continuing to grow in Scott County due to the increase of manufacturing facilities and the employment rate increasing in Scott County we are seeing are seeing an increase in a more divers population. The Hispanic population makes up 4% of Scott Counties total population. We quickly saw a need to expand our programing to this underserved audience when we looked at current Scott County reports, and number of Hispanic contacts being low compared to the total percentage of the populations. We teamed up with the Migrant Educational Program and Scott County Schools to incorporate these day camps for this underserved audience. Our individual programing efforts not only brought our office team closer together, but it gave us the opportunity to share programs to youth that would not otherwise get these opportunities. 50 youth were bussed to the Scott County Extension office three different days. They were thought how to plant a garden, build a bird house, cook meals form different countries, and have a bit of fun shooting off rockets. They youth demonstrated skill and had fun while learning something new each day. This round of day camps will continue for a second week in June as the older group will participate in a four day long set of woodworking day camps. They will build four different projects that they then can turn into the county fair. The process of participating in the county fair is a new experience for all individuals and will give them the opportunity to showcase their work to the community.
