"In The Weeds with IPM" for ANR Agents

Author: Jonathan Green

Planning Unit: Plant and Soil Sciences

Major Program: Integrated Pest Management

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Beginning in 2021 a Zoom session titled “In The Weeds” was initiated for Agriculture and Natural Resource agents.  These sessions were conducted on a monthly basis throughout the growing season and were intended as an informal discussion and dialogue on current issues, observations, and other weed relevant topics that were primarily associated with pastures and other forage crops.  Approximately 30 to 40 individuals participated per session, which represented 25 to 33% of the ANR agents across Kentucky.  Because of the expressed interest to continue this activity, these sessions were held again throughout the 2022 growing season.  For the 2023 season the “In the Weeds” sessions were merged with the “IPM Hour” which was initiated in 2022 to discuss relevant pest management issues for grain crops.  These current sessions titled “In The Weeds with IPM” to discuss weeds, plant diseases, and insects are now held on a bi-weekly basis and includes Extension faculty from weed science, plant pathology, and entomology who co-lead the discussion.  Participation among ANR agents continue to be 30 to 40 individuals per session.  Each of these sessions allow a forum to ask questions, discuss current pest management issues that are impacting farmers and others associated with pest management decisions, and talk about pest management events to anticipate in the near future as the crop season progresses.   The questions and observations shared by ANR agents also increases an awareness among state specialists on the current pest issues associated with crop production across Kentucky.
